The Cotton Picker, An Odyssey

by Johnny Hernández

Johnny’s book is truly an adventure to read. Born in 1944, Johnny takes you through his young years living on Henderson street in Temple, Texas to the cotton fields in the Sneed Ranch in Milam County and around the state. From there he takes his readers through his "adventurous" school years and the beginnings of a humble music career "getting down to" the Top 40 and big band sounds overheard in his neighborhood. Soon Johnny and his brother, "Little Joe" develop into mature and well respected Tejano musicians showcasing their band, "Little Joe, Johnny y La Familia" all over the Southwest. Johnny’s talent, as a composer and lead singer, contributed lots to the band’s success. Enduring addiction, hatred, broken promises and sad relationships, Johnny speaks well throughout the book about his personal ordeals and the Tejano experiences of his family in modern day Texas.
